Rahul Gandhi Questions Centre Over Marco Rubio’s Proposed Meeting With Indian Officials in Mumbai

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has questioned the Centre over the proposed meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian government officials in Mumbai, alleging confusion within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) over the planned engagement.

Gandhi’s remarks came after US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said Rubio was expected to meet Indian government officials in Mumbai during his upcoming visit. Gor also indicated that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was expected to attend the meeting alongside other officials travelling from Delhi.

Reacting to the announcement, Gandhi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the circumstances surrounding the proposed meeting. The government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had not issued an immediate response to his comments at the time of the report.

What Rahul Gandhi Said About Rubio’s Visit

In a post on X on Friday, Gandhi criticised the government over the reported diplomatic arrangements and suggested that the Prime Minister should clarify the situation.

His comments focused on the apparent lack of clarity surrounding the meeting, particularly following the US envoy’s public remarks about Jaishankar’s expected participation.

The Congress leader’s statement added to the political debate over the handling of high-level diplomatic engagements between India and the United States.

However, Gandhi’s remarks represent the opposition’s criticism of the government, rather than confirmation of any official dispute within the MEA.

Sergio Gor’s Remarks on the Expected Jaishankar Meeting

The controversy followed comments by Sergio Gor at an interactive session during the Bloomberg New Economy Forum.

Gor said Rubio would meet Indian government officials in Mumbai and indicated that Jaishankar was expected to join the discussions, along with other officials travelling from Delhi.

The statement prompted questions from Congress leaders about the communication of official diplomatic engagements.

Congress general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh had also criticised the government over the announcement, asking why details about the external affairs minister’s expected meeting were being communicated by the US ambassador rather than through India’s official diplomatic channels.

Ramesh questioned the MEA’s silence on the matter and argued that announcements concerning the Indian foreign minister’s engagements within the country should ordinarily come from the ministry’s official spokesperson.

His comments reflected the Congress party’s broader criticism of the government’s handling of information surrounding Rubio’s proposed visit.

Marco Rubio’s India Tour: Mumbai and Jamnagar on the Itinerary

According to the report, Rubio is scheduled to travel to Central Asia before visiting India. His itinerary includes Samarkand in Uzbekistan, followed by Mumbai and Jamnagar in Gujarat, during a visit planned for October 17–22.

In Mumbai, Rubio is expected to meet Indian government officials. Gor’s remarks indicated that Jaishankar would likely participate, although the final arrangements should be confirmed through official announcements.

The US secretary of state is also expected to visit a Reliance facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, as part of the trip.

The visit comes amid wider discussions concerning India-US trade relations, American tariffs and India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. These issues have formed part of the broader context of economic and diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

India-US Relations Under Political Scrutiny

Rubio’s proposed visit comes at a time when trade and energy issues remain important elements of the India-US relationship.

Differences over tariffs and India’s energy trade with Russia have attracted attention as both countries continue to engage on economic and strategic matters. Against this backdrop, high-level meetings between Indian and American officials are likely to draw scrutiny from political parties and observers.

The Congress has used the announcement to question the government’s communication practices and the role of the MEA in publicising diplomatic engagements.

For the government, the immediate focus will be on the official schedule and the substance of discussions during Rubio’s visit. Any assessment of the meeting’s diplomatic significance will depend on confirmed details and statements from the officials involved.

What Happens Next?

The key developments to watch are an official confirmation of Rubio’s meeting with Jaishankar, further details about the discussions in Mumbai and any response from the government to the Congress’s criticism.

Until the relevant authorities provide clarification, the reported meeting arrangements and the political allegations surrounding them should be treated separately.

Rubio’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity for India and the United States to discuss bilateral priorities. At the same time, the episode has opened a political debate in India over diplomatic communication and the public announcement of ministerial engagements.
