New Delhi: India's ongoing digital transformation in education has reached a significant milestone, with more than 1.49 lakh schools across the country now covered under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital learning initiatives, according to the government.

The large-scale modernization drive has strengthened access to technology-enabled learning, expanded online education opportunities, and boosted skill development programs aimed at preparing India's youth for a rapidly evolving economy.

Over 1.76 Lakh Smart Classrooms Established Across Schools

As part of the government's push to integrate technology into education, more than 1.76 lakh smart classrooms and 1.79 lakh ICT laboratories have been sanctioned nationwide.

These initiatives are designed to improve classroom learning experiences through:

  • Interactive digital content
  • Technology-enabled teaching methods
  • Enhanced student engagement
  • Improved access to educational resources
  • Better digital literacy among students

Officials believe the expansion of digital infrastructure is helping bridge educational gaps between urban and rural regions while creating a more inclusive learning environment.

SWAYAM Records Over 6.1 Crore Enrolments

India's flagship online learning platform SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) has emerged as a major contributor to the country's digital education ecosystem.

According to government data:

  • More than 18,580 courses are available on the platform.
  • Total enrolments have crossed 6.1 crore.
  • Over 53.7 lakh certifications have been awarded.

The platform provides learners with access to high-quality courses from leading educational institutions, helping students and professionals enhance their knowledge and skills.

Digital Learning Platforms Expand Educational Access

Several government-backed digital learning initiatives have significantly expanded educational accessibility across the country.

Key platforms include:

PM e-VIDYA

A comprehensive initiative providing educational content through television, radio, and digital channels.

SWAYAM PRABHA

A network of educational television channels delivering curriculum-based learning content.

DIKSHA

India's national digital infrastructure for school education, offering a vast repository of learning materials for students and teachers.

The government stated that DIKSHA currently hosts more than 3.66 lakh e-content resources available in 135 languages, making educational content accessible to diverse linguistic communities across India.

One Nation One Subscription Benefits Nearly 99 Lakh Users

In higher education, the government's One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative has significantly improved access to academic and research resources.

The program currently covers:

  • 7,414 educational institutions
  • Nearly 99 lakh students, researchers, and faculty members

The initiative aims to provide affordable and equitable access to scholarly journals, research publications, and academic databases across the country.

Atal Innovation Mission Encourages Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The government's innovation ecosystem continues to expand under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).

To nurture creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship among students, the mission has established more than:

  • 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs
  • Benefiting over 1.1 crore students
  • Supporting development of more than 16 lakh projects

These innovation labs encourage students to explore emerging technologies such as:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Robotics
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • 3D Printing
  • Electronics and Design Thinking

Startup Ecosystem Sees Strong Growth

The government's focus on innovation has also contributed to the rapid growth of India's startup ecosystem.

According to official figures:

  • More than 2.3 lakh startups have been officially recognized.
  • 72 Atal Incubation Centres have supported over 6,700 startups.
  • These startups have collectively generated more than 32,000 jobs.

Officials said the growth reflects India's emergence as one of the world's leading startup destinations.

Jan Shikshan Sansthans Drive Grassroots Skill Development

Skill development initiatives have also witnessed significant progress through the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) network.

Since its transformation in 2018, JSS has focused on providing community-based vocational training aligned with local economic needs.

Popular training areas include:

  • Tailoring and embroidery
  • Handicrafts
  • Food processing
  • Health-related services
  • Entrepreneurship development

According to government data, 36.48 lakh beneficiaries received training under JSS programs between 2018 and March 31, 2026.

Empowering Tribal Communities and Rural Entrepreneurs

The JSS initiative has also played an important role in promoting economic inclusion among tribal communities.

As of March 31, 2026:

  • 26,720 tribal beneficiaries were enrolled.
  • 26,519 individuals successfully completed training programs.

To improve market access for artisans and micro-entrepreneurs, JSS products have been integrated into the UdyamKart portal since December 2024.

The platform helps connect local producers directly with buyers, creating new income opportunities and supporting rural livelihoods.

Building the Foundation for Viksit Bharat 2047

The government highlighted that digital education, innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development initiatives are collectively helping create a future-ready workforce aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Officials stated that through technology-driven learning, startup promotion, and community-based skill development, India's youth are increasingly contributing to economic growth, innovation, and nation-building.

As digital infrastructure continues to expand and educational opportunities become more accessible, India is positioning itself to become a global leader in knowledge, technology, and human capital development.
