Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced significant layoffs at Bungie, the renowned game development studio behind the popular Destiny franchise and the upcoming Marathon reboot. The restructuring will affect a substantial number of employees, including most members of the Destiny development team and several developers working on Marathon.
The workforce reduction was confirmed by PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst, who described the decision as difficult but necessary to align Bungie's resources with its long-term business strategy and development priorities.
Sony Confirms Major Workforce Reduction at Bungie
In an official statement, Hermen Hulst revealed that Sony had decided to reduce Bungie's workforce after months of reviewing the studio's future direction, project priorities, and role within the broader PlayStation portfolio.
"We have made the decision to reduce Bungie's workforce, affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie's operations," Hulst said.
He acknowledged that the layoffs represent painful news for employees and emphasized that the decision followed extensive discussions and careful evaluation of multiple alternatives before moving forward with restructuring.
Destiny Enters a New Chapter
Hermen Hulst noted that Bungie is entering a new phase following the release of the final live-service content update for Destiny 2. While praising the franchise's decade-long success and influence on the gaming industry, he recognized the dedication of the developers who helped build one of PlayStation's most successful online gaming experiences.
The PlayStation chief stated that the restructuring reflects the studio's transition as Destiny moves beyond its current live-service roadmap.
Marathon Remains a Key PlayStation Project
Despite the layoffs, Sony reaffirmed its commitment to Marathon, Bungie's upcoming science-fiction extraction shooter. Hulst said Marathon continues to be an important title within PlayStation's gaming portfolio, and the company will continue supporting the remaining development team as work progresses.
He also revealed that Bungie is exploring concepts for future projects while focusing on delivering Marathon successfully.
Support for Affected Employees
Sony stated that its immediate priority is supporting employees impacted by the layoffs. According to Hulst, Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment will provide assistance during the transition, including exploring employment opportunities across Sony's global studios wherever possible.
The company said it remains committed to helping affected staff members find new roles within the wider PlayStation organization whenever suitable positions become available.
Sony Restructures Bungie for Long-Term Strategy
The layoffs mark another significant restructuring within the gaming industry as major publishers continue adjusting development teams to align with changing market conditions and long-term business objectives.
While Destiny enters a new stage and Marathon continues in development, Sony says Bungie's future will focus on sustainable growth, strategic resource allocation, and the development of new gaming experiences.
