PM Modi, Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi Inaugurate Maruti Suzuki's Kharkhoda Plant in Haryana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi jointly inaugurated Maruti Suzuki India's new automobile manufacturing facility at Kharkhoda, Haryana, during the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum, marking a major milestone in the strategic economic partnership between the two countries.

The state-of-the-art manufacturing plant is expected to strengthen India's position as a global automobile production hub while boosting employment, exports, and sustainable manufacturing under the 'Make in India' initiative.

PM Modi Highlights India-Japan Manufacturing Partnership

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the growing strength of India-Japan industrial cooperation, stating that the partnership has played a key role in making India a global manufacturing destination.

He noted that motorcycles manufactured by Japanese companies such as Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Honda are exported from India to markets around the world. PM Modi added that the collaboration between Japanese technology and investment with India's manufacturing capabilities has also benefited sectors including air conditioners, power grid equipment, precision engineering, and medical technology.

The Prime Minister said India continues to play an increasingly important role in global supply chains despite ongoing international trade uncertainties and slowing global demand.

Kharkhoda Plant to Become One of the World's Largest Auto Manufacturing Facilities

Spread across 800 acres, the Kharkhoda manufacturing facility has an initial annual production capacity of 5 lakh vehicles, which Maruti Suzuki plans to expand to 10 lakh vehicles per year in the coming years.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to become one of the largest automobile manufacturing plants in the world and significantly enhance Maruti Suzuki's production capabilities in India.

The company has announced an investment of approximately ₹35,000 crore for the project, which is expected to create more than 21,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

The new facility will also support Maruti Suzuki's long-term objective of achieving an annual production capacity of 40 lakh vehicles across its manufacturing operations.

Suzuki Reaffirms Commitment to India

Speaking at the inauguration, Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Representative Director and Chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, described the project as a reflection of the successful India-Japan partnership and the impact of the 'Make in India' programme.

He said the supportive policy environment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged Suzuki to accelerate investments in manufacturing, employment generation, exports, and technology development in India, contributing to the country's vision of Viksit Bharat.

Sustainability at the Core of the New Facility

The Kharkhoda plant has been developed with a strong emphasis on environmentally sustainable manufacturing.

The facility currently meets a significant portion of its electricity requirements through renewable energy sources, including a 20 MW solar power system, which is planned to be expanded to 70 MW by 2030.

In addition, the manufacturing unit includes:

• Renewable energy integration
• Biogas generation facilities
• Advanced energy storage systems
• Environment-friendly production processes

These initiatives are aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency across manufacturing operations.

Smart Factory Powered by Industry 5.0 Technologies

Developed under Suzuki's Smart Factory concept, the Kharkhoda plant uses advanced digital technologies to monitor manufacturing operations in real time.

The facility incorporates Industry 5.0 technologies, including collaborative robots that work alongside human operators to enhance productivity, safety, precision, and product quality.

The manufacturing plant began operations in February 2025, following the foundation stone ceremony conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2022.

Strengthening India's Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem

The inauguration of the Kharkhoda plant is expected to further strengthen India's automotive manufacturing ecosystem by attracting greater investment, expanding exports, creating employment opportunities, and supporting the country's ambition to become a global hub for automobile production.

The project also reflects the deepening economic and technological cooperation between India and Japan, with both countries continuing to collaborate across manufacturing, infrastructure, clean energy, and advanced technology sectors.
