Amit Shah Meets President Murmu After PM Modi Visit, Cabinet Reshuffle Speculation Gains Momentum
Speculation over a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle has intensified after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the President following his foreign visit.
New Delhi: Speculation over a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle has intensified after Union Home Minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, just two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the President following his foreign visit.
While the Prime Minister's meeting was widely viewed as a customary post-visit briefing, Shah's interaction with the President has sparked fresh political discussions about a potential reorganisation of the Union Council of Ministers ahead of the upcoming Parliament session.
The timing of Shah's meeting has added to the political buzz, especially as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) simultaneously announced a major organisational overhaul of its Uttar Pradesh unit in preparation for the 2027 Assembly elections. The revamped state leadership is aimed at strengthening the party's social outreach and improving organisational representation across different communities.
Despite the growing speculation, senior BJP leaders have downplayed any immediate connection between Shah's meeting and a Cabinet reshuffle. According to party insiders, the Home Minister's visit could have been a routine consultation or even a courtesy meeting following President Murmu's recent birthday.
"We do expect a Cabinet reshuffle at some stage, but whether the Home Minister's meeting with the President was linked to it is not known," a senior BJP functionary said.
Recent Political Developments Add to Speculation
Political observers note that Shah's meeting comes shortly after Minister of State George Kurian resigned from the Union Cabinet after his Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21 without being renominated. Meanwhile, Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu continues to serve in the Cabinet despite his Rajya Sabha tenure ending on the same date, prompting discussions over possible ministerial adjustments.
Sources also suggest that the government could be considering changes beyond the Cabinet, including appointments of new Governors ahead of Assembly elections in seven states scheduled for 2027.
Additionally, there is speculation that certain ministries may be restructured to improve administrative efficiency, with reports indicating that a key ministry could be merged with the Ministry of Railways as part of broader governance reforms.
New Faces Could Find Place in Cabinet
As speculation continues, several recently elected Rajya Sabha members are being discussed as possible candidates for ministerial positions. Among the names circulating within political circles are Vinod Tawde, Tarun Chugh, and K. Laxman.
However, senior BJP leaders maintain that any Cabinet expansion or reshuffle before the Monsoon Session of Parliament appears unlikely. The session is expected to begin in late July, although the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has not yet announced the official schedule.
Focus on Parliamentary Strategy
Recent developments involving the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena (UBT) have also contributed to the ongoing speculation. Both parties are facing internal disputes over rebel MPs, with the original party leadership seeking their disqualification.
Political analysts believe these developments could influence the government's parliamentary strategy as it looks to strengthen legislative support for key Bills during the upcoming session.
