Apple Raises MacBook and iPad Prices in India by Up to Rs 1 Lakh Amid Rising AI Chip Costs
Apple has significantly increased the prices of several MacBook and iPad models in India, with some devices becoming costlier by as much as Rs 1 lakh. The price hike comes as the technology giant faces rising semiconductor and memory chip costs driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure worldwide.
According to the updated pricing listed on Apple India's official website, MacBook and iPad models have witnessed price increases ranging from 20% to over 40%, making them considerably more expensive than their original launch prices.
MacBook Pro Price Increased by Nearly Rs 50,000
One of the biggest price revisions has been applied to the 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by Apple's M5 Pro chip.
The premium laptop, which was launched at Rs 2,49,900, is now priced at Rs 2,99,900, reflecting an increase of around 20%.
The revised pricing affects Apple's latest generation of professional laptops built on the M5 chipset, further raising the cost of high-performance computing devices in India.
iPad Air Sees Over 40% Price Hike
Apple has also sharply increased the pricing of its 13-inch iPad Air.
The entry-level Wi-Fi model, previously available for Rs 84,900, now carries a price tag of Rs 1,19,900, marking an increase of approximately 41.2%.
The latest pricing makes the iPad Air one of the most affected Apple products following the company's recent revision.
Why Apple Increased Prices
Apple said the global consumer electronics industry is facing unprecedented pressure due to soaring demand for memory and storage chips.
According to the company, the explosive growth of AI data centres has significantly increased demand for DRAM, NAND flash memory, storage components, and advanced processors, creating supply shortages for consumer electronics manufacturers.
In an official statement, Apple said it had absorbed rising component costs for several months but has now reached a stage where price increases have become unavoidable.
The company added that it continues working to minimize the impact on customers while navigating an increasingly challenging semiconductor market.
Industry Experts Explain the Surge
Neil Shah, Co-founder and Vice President of Research at Counterpoint Research, said Apple's latest pricing reflects broader changes across the global PC and tablet industry.
According to Shah, rapidly increasing prices of memory chips and processors have fundamentally altered manufacturing costs for laptops and tablets.
He noted that Apple had delayed passing these higher costs on to consumers for nearly two quarters, but sustained increases in semiconductor pricing have made further cost absorption difficult.
Shah also believes the supply situation may remain constrained for at least the next two years as semiconductor manufacturers continue prioritizing AI infrastructure over consumer electronics.
AI Boom Driving Semiconductor Shortages
Industry analysts say the ongoing AI revolution is reshaping the global semiconductor supply chain.
Memory manufacturers are allocating larger portions of production capacity to AI servers and data centres, reducing availability for consumer devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
This imbalance has pushed memory prices to record highs.
Leading memory chip manufacturer Micron recently reported gross margins of 86%, a significant increase compared to around 15% a year earlier, highlighting the growing profitability of AI-driven semiconductor demand.
Apple Intelligence Could Face Demand Challenges
The timing of the price increase comes as Apple prepares to expand Apple Intelligence, its on-device AI platform, across Macs and iPads later this year.
These AI-powered features require higher memory and computing capabilities, making hardware upgrades increasingly important for users seeking the latest Apple experience.
However, analysts warn that higher prices could impact short-term consumer demand, especially among price-sensitive buyers.
At the same time, experts believe some customers planning an upgrade may instead choose higher-end configurations to maximize long-term value, potentially driving stronger demand for Apple's premium product lineup.
Premium Devices May Continue to Get More Expensive
Industry observers expect pricing pressure to continue as AI-driven demand for advanced semiconductor components remains strong.
While Apple has historically maintained one of the world's most efficient supply chains, analysts say the latest price revisions indicate that even the company's purchasing power is no longer enough to fully offset rising production costs.
Unless semiconductor supply improves significantly, consumers may continue to see higher prices across premium laptops, tablets, and other consumer electronics over the coming years.
