Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Gets India T20 Call-Up After Shattering IPL Records

New Delhi: Indian cricket's newest sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has received his maiden call-up to the Indian men's T20 International squad following a phenomenal Indian Premier League (IPL) season that captured the attention of cricket fans worldwide.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, with the 15-year-old batting prodigy emerging as one of the biggest talking points.

If selected in the playing XI, Sooryavanshi could become the youngest player ever to represent India's senior men's cricket team, surpassing the record previously held by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the age of 16.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Dream Run Continues

The call-up comes after an extraordinary IPL campaign in which the teenage left-handed opener established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket.

Representing the Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi dominated opposition bowling attacks and finished the season with an astonishing 776 runs in 16 matches, including one century and five half-centuries.

His aggressive batting style and ability to score quickly made him one of the standout performers of the tournament.

Adding another milestone to his remarkable season, Sooryavanshi also broke the record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Chris Gayle.

Historic IPL Achievements

The young batter's impact on the IPL was unprecedented.

His performances earned him both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the Best Emerging Player award, making him the first player in IPL history to win both honours in the same season.

Cricket experts and former players have widely praised his maturity, fearless approach, and ability to perform under pressure despite his young age.

His breakthrough season quickly sparked discussions about a possible place in India's senior squad, and selectors have now rewarded his consistency with a national call-up.

Ajit Agarkar Calls Sooryavanshi a "Game Changer"

India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision to include the teenager in the squad, highlighting his match-winning abilities and exceptional performances throughout the IPL.

Speaking to reporters, Agarkar described Sooryavanshi as a player capable of changing games single-handedly.

"We've seen what he can do. Towards the playoffs, he almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals. Not just this season, he had a great start, and to back it up in a competition that is as competitive and high-pressure, he's a game changer," Agarkar said.

The chairman of selectors further added that the youngster had effectively selected himself through his performances and that the management has high expectations from him going forward.

Shreyas Iyer Appointed India T20 Captain

The BCCI also announced that Shreyas Iyer will lead India's T20 side for the upcoming series, replacing Suryakumar Yadav as captain.

Iyer's appointment comes after a successful leadership stint in franchise cricket. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and later led Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish in 2025 and a playoff appearance this season.

Agarkar described Iyer as a standout candidate for the leadership role due to both his captaincy credentials and consistent performances.

India's Upcoming T20 Assignments

India will begin its T20 campaign with a two-match series against Ireland later this month before taking on England in a five-match T20I series in July.

The series is expected to provide an opportunity for several young players, including Sooryavanshi, to showcase their talent at the international level.

BCCI Announces Asian Games Squad

The BCCI also revealed India's squad for the men's cricket competition at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan.

The squad includes star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, along with several players selected for the T20I series.

The men's cricket competition at the Asian Games is scheduled to begin on September 24, with the final set to take place on October 3.
