Coal Minister Raises Alarm Over Missing 40 Lakh Tonnes of Coal at SCCL, Seeks Immediate Investigation

Hyderabad: Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy has urged the Telangana government to conduct an immediate investigation into reports alleging the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal valued at approximately ₹1,600 crore from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). The minister warned that the alleged loss could further impact the financial stability of the state-owned mining company, which is already facing significant financial challenges.

In a letter dated June 10, 2026, addressed to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the Union Minister highlighted media reports claiming that a massive quantity of coal had gone missing, resulting in a substantial financial setback for SCCL.

According to the minister, the allegations are particularly concerning given SCCL's current financial situation. He noted that the company is reportedly burdened by unpaid dues exceeding ₹51,500 crore from the Telangana government, making any additional losses a serious matter for the organization's long-term sustainability.

SCCL, one of India's leading coal-producing companies, operates as a joint venture between the Government of Telangana (51%) and the Government of India (49%).

Urgent Inquiry Needed to Verify Allegations

In his communication, Kishan Reddy emphasized the need for a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the authenticity of the claims. He stated that if the allegations remain unverified or unaddressed, they could undermine investor confidence, weaken SCCL's financial position, and hamper its future growth prospects.

The minister called on the state government to ascertain the facts, examine whether any irregularities occurred, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing safeguards, internal controls, and monitoring mechanisms within SCCL.

Focus on Technology-Driven Monitoring and Transparency

To prevent similar incidents in the future, Reddy recommended the adoption of advanced technology-based monitoring systems and regular operational reviews. He suggested that digital tracking tools, periodic audits, and stronger internal oversight could help identify vulnerabilities early and strengthen accountability across the organization.

The minister further noted that enhanced transparency and robust governance measures would help close systemic gaps, improve operational efficiency, and reinforce SCCL's credibility among stakeholders.

Call for Chief Minister's Intervention

Kishan Reddy also sought the personal intervention of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to ensure the smooth functioning of SCCL and safeguard the interests of employees, workers, and all stakeholders associated with the company.

The development has brought renewed attention to governance and accountability within India's coal sector, with industry observers closely watching the outcome of any official investigation into the alleged disappearance of coal stocks.
