The Delhi government has approved the Delhi EV Policy 2026, introducing major incentives to accelerate electric vehicle adoption in the national capital. One of the biggest highlights of the new policy is that electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh (ex-showroom) will receive a 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees, making EV ownership significantly more affordable.
The policy, which comes into effect on July 1, 2026, aims to transform Delhi into a pollution-free city by March 31, 2030, while encouraging a large-scale shift from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric mobility.
Delhi EV Policy 2026: Key Highlights
Announcing the new policy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government will invest nearly ₹15,000 crore over the next four years to strengthen electric mobility infrastructure and reduce vehicular pollution across the city.
The policy focuses on increasing EV adoption through financial incentives, expanded charging infrastructure, and a phased transition away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
100% Tax Exemption for Electric Cars
Under the new Delhi EV Policy:
- Electric cars with an ex-showroom price of up to ₹30 lakh will receive full exemption from road tax and registration charges.
- The move is expected to make electric vehicles more affordable for middle-income buyers while boosting EV sales in the capital.
Subsidies for Electric Two-Wheelers and Three-Wheelers
The government has also announced purchase incentives for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
Electric Two-Wheeler Subsidy
Eligible buyers will receive:
- ₹30,000 subsidy in the first year
- ₹20,000 subsidy in the second year
- ₹10,000 subsidy in the third year
Electric Three-Wheeler Subsidy
Buyers of electric three-wheelers will be eligible for:
- ₹50,000 incentive in the first year
- ₹40,000 incentive in the second year
- ₹30,000 incentive in the third year
Additionally, buyers of N1 category electric trucks will receive purchase incentives of up to ₹1 lakh.
Petrol and CNG Two-Wheelers to Be Phased Out
The Delhi government has also announced a phased transition toward electric vehicles.
According to the policy:
- Only electric autorickshaws will be registered in Delhi from January 1, 2027.
- Registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers will gradually end, with only electric two-wheelers being registered from April 1, 2028.
The government believes these measures will significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality in the national capital.
Vehicle Scrapping Incentives
To encourage owners of older vehicles to switch to electric mobility, the policy introduces a scrapping incentive of ₹1 lakh for owners of BS-IV or older four-wheelers who scrap their vehicles and purchase an electric vehicle.
Officials clarified that hybrid vehicles will not be eligible for subsidies under the new EV policy.
Charging Infrastructure to Expand
The Delhi government will also develop a dedicated online portal for EV-related incentives and applications. Alongside financial benefits, the policy includes plans to expand:
- EV charging stations
- Vehicle scrapping facilities
- Electric mobility infrastructure across Delhi
These initiatives are expected to support the city's long-term goal of increasing EV adoption and reducing pollution.
