Kotak Mahindra Bank has announced that Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashok Vaswani will step down at the end of his current term on December 31, 2026. The bank has already initiated the process of selecting its next MD & CEO.

Kotak Mahindra Bank informed stock exchanges on Saturday that Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) Ashok Vaswani has decided not to seek reappointment after his current three-year term ends on December 31, 2026.

According to the bank's regulatory filing, Vaswani cited personal reasons for his decision to step down. The Board of Directors has accepted his decision and has begun the process of appointing a new Managing Director and CEO in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Begins CEO Succession Process

In its official filing, the bank stated that Ashok Vaswani informed the Board that he does not wish to continue in the role beyond the completion of his current tenure.

The bank added that the Board has initiated the succession process and expects to complete the appointment of the next MD & CEO within the applicable regulatory timelines.

The announcement comes nearly three years after Vaswani assumed leadership of one of India's leading private sector banks.

Ashok Vaswani Took Charge After Uday Kotak's Exit

Ashok Vaswani joined Kotak Mahindra Bank following the resignation of founder and billionaire banker Uday Kotak, who stepped down as Managing Director and CEO in September 2023.

After receiving approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in October 2023, Vaswani officially took charge as MD & CEO on January 1, 2024, for a three-year term.

His appointment marked a significant leadership transition for the bank after decades under Uday Kotak's leadership.

Over 35 Years of Global Banking Experience

Ashok Vaswani brings more than 35 years of international banking experience, having worked across retail banking, consumer finance, corporate banking and digital payments.

Before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, he served as President of Pagaya Technologies, a global financial technology company.

Earlier in his career, Vaswani held several senior leadership positions at Barclays and Citigroup.

At Barclays, he served as CEO of Barclays UK before leading the bank's Global Consumer, Private, Corporate and Payments businesses. During his tenure, he played a key role in driving Barclays' digital transformation by modernising technology infrastructure and improving customer experience.

At Citigroup, he served as CEO of Asia-Pacific Consumer Banking, overseeing operations across multiple international markets.

Leadership Roles Beyond Banking

Apart from his executive positions, Vaswani has served on the boards of several globally recognised organisations, including the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), Visa, and the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research.

Academically, he is a Commerce graduate, a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Company Secretary (CS), and has completed executive education at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
