Indian Stock Market Ends Higher as Nifty 50 and Sensex Rally
Indian equity markets finished Thursday’s trading session on a positive note, with the Nifty 50 rising 1.66% and the BSE Sensex climbing 2.11%. Gains in technology, IT, banking and automobile-related stocks supported the broader market rally, although several consumer and infrastructure-linked shares ended in negative territory.
The session saw notable gains in heavyweight stocks, including Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries. However, a sharp decline in Nestle India shares weighed on the performance of select stocks.
Despite the benchmark indices closing higher, market breadth remained negative, indicating that more stocks declined than advanced across the exchanges.
Nifty 50 Closing Performance: Tech Mahindra Leads Gainers
The Nifty 50 closed 1.66% higher, supported by strong performances from technology, financial services and telecommunications companies.
Tech Mahindra emerged as the index’s top gainer, advancing 4.74% to close at ₹1,649.90. ICICI Bank followed with a 3.18% increase, ending the session at ₹1,381.20. Bharti Airtel also recorded a strong performance, gaining 3.17% to settle at ₹1,851.50.
These gains helped lift the benchmark index and reflected buying interest in several large-cap stocks.
Top Nifty 50 Gainers
-
Tech Mahindra: Up 4.74% to ₹1,649.90
-
ICICI Bank: Up 3.18% to ₹1,381.20
-

Top Nifty 50 Losers
Nestle India was the biggest loser among the listed Nifty 50 stocks, falling 7.28% to ₹1,282.50. Adani Enterprises declined 1.20% to ₹2,690, while Trent slipped 1.04% to close at ₹2,940.
The declines highlighted the mixed performance beneath the benchmark index’s strong headline gains.
Sensex Jumps 2.11% as Banking and Energy Stocks Advance
The BSE Sensex rose 2.11% by the close, outperforming the Nifty 50 during the session.
Tech Mahindra gained 4.61% to finish at ₹1,648.70, while ICICI Bank advanced 4.17% to ₹1,395. Reliance Industries also contributed to the positive performance, climbing 4.03% to close at ₹1,223.30.
On the weaker side, Nestle India dropped 7.52% to ₹1,280. Hindustan Unilever edged down 0.15% to ₹1,894.20.
NTPC was marginally higher, gaining 0.03% to end at ₹314.10.
Key Sensex Movers

-
ICICI Bank: Up 4.17%
-
Reliance Industries: Up 4.03%
-
Nestle India: Down 7.52%
-
Hindustan Unilever: Down 0.15%
The performance of large-cap technology, banking and energy stocks provided support to the Sensex, even as select consumer stocks experienced selling pressure.
Market Breadth Remains Negative Despite Benchmark Gains
Although the headline indices ended higher, market breadth suggested that the rally was not shared by the majority of listed stocks.
On the National Stock Exchange, 1,730 stocks declined, while 881 advanced and 45 remained unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2,553 stocks fell, compared with 1,542 that gained, while 160 ended unchanged.
This divergence between benchmark performance and broader market participation is an important feature of the session. It indicates that gains in a group of influential stocks can lift major indices even when a larger number of individual shares decline.
Investors may therefore look beyond the headline index movements to assess the strength and breadth of the market.
India VIX Falls 4.03%
The India VIX, which measures expected market volatility based on Nifty 50 options, declined 4.03% to 14.04.
A fall in the volatility index generally indicates that options markets are pricing in lower expected near-term volatility. However, it does not guarantee that market prices will remain stable or that further gains will follow.
The decline in India VIX accompanied the benchmark indices’ positive closing performance.
Gold Rises as Crude Oil Prices Edge Lower
Commodity markets delivered a mixed performance during the session.
Gold futures for December delivery rose 1.66%, gaining $68.11 to reach $4,176.01 per troy ounce. The increase put gold among the stronger-performing commodities in the reported session.
Crude oil futures for November delivery slipped 0.18% to $94.92 a barrel. December Brent crude futures fell more sharply, declining 1.68% to $104.28 a barrel.
The different movements in gold and oil reflected contrasting price action across commodity markets. These changes may also be relevant to Indian investors because movements in crude oil and precious metals can influence inflation expectations, import costs and currency-market sentiment.
Rupee Weakens Against the US Dollar
In currency trading, the US dollar strengthened against the Indian rupee, with USD/INR rising 0.13% to 95.27. The euro also advanced against the rupee, gaining 0.32% to 106.51.
Meanwhile, US Dollar Index futures declined 0.42% to 101.92.
Currency movements remain an important factor for Indian markets, particularly for companies exposed to imports, exports and international commodity prices. A weaker rupee can increase the domestic cost of imports, while its effect on exporters varies depending on their revenue mix and operating costs.
What Thursday’s Market Closing Means for Investors
Thursday’s session delivered strong gains in India’s benchmark indices, led by technology, banking and selected heavyweight stocks. Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries were among the notable contributors, while Nestle India recorded a substantial decline.
However, the negative market breadth suggests that the rally was concentrated rather than widespread. The fall in India VIX offered a signal of reduced expected volatility, while movements in gold, crude oil and currency markets added further context to the day’s trading.
For investors, the key takeaway is to assess individual stock performance and broader market participation alongside benchmark index returns. One positive session alone does not establish a lasting market trend, and investment decisions should take account of company fundamentals, valuations, risk tolerance and longer-term objectives.
